So, you’ve finally decided on your tattoo design. After you’ve carefully selected a professional, sterile environment to get your work done in, it’s important to consider how you’re going to care for your new piece. If you have sensitive skin and want to heal your tattoo in the best way, read our advice below.

Listen to your tattoo artist

If you’ve been tattooed by a credible artist, they will make sure to provide you with aftercare tips before you leave the studio. These may include preventing your new piece from being submerged in water while it heals, avoiding using perfumed creams and - arguably the most important part of all - to not pick at any scabs. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions; how well the tattoo heals is also a reflection on them, after all.

Don’t leave your wrap on for too long

As tempting as it may be to sneak a proper look at your new tat, it’s best to keep the wrap on for at least an hour or two after you’ve left the studio. This will prevent bacteria from entering what is essentially an open wound, as well as providing a barrier between your skin and your clothes.

If you have sensitive skin, make sure you don’t leave the protective film on for longer than that; this can cause your skin to sweat underneath, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and skin irritation. If you want to avoid the plastic wrap completely, ensuring you wear loose fitting clothing that allows your skin to breathe is a good idea.

Use a gentle, unperfumed soap

After you get your tattoo done, your skin will be tender and sensitive to a number of things. In order to remove plasma, sweat and any blood, it’s essential that you wash your piece a few hours after it’s done. When doing this, make sure you’re using an antimicrobial soap that doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals and thoroughly cleansed hands. Taking your time when doing this and using a very gentle touch will prevent any unnecessary abrasion, leaving your skin cleansed and calm. It’s also important to pat your tattoo down to dry it with a fresh sheet of kitchen towel; avoid wiping any paper across your work as this will aggravate your skin - and hurt!

Use the right tattoo moisturiser or aftercare cream

As you leave the studio, your artist should advise you on what kind of cream to use during the healing process. This may be something as simple as an unscented body butter, or a recommendation for a product they stock in-store. However, it’s important to know what you can and can’t get away with using on your skin; you know it better than anyone else, so make sure you’re making a savvy choice. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to avoid any thick ointments as these run the risk of clogging your pores, increasing your risk of developing a rash or pimples on your tattoo.

Consider a vegan tattoo cream

As more people opt for a plant-based lifestyle, the demand for vegan skincare products grows. If you have sensitive skin and want to find something gentle but effective for your tattoo aftercare regime, this can be a good route to consider. Our Aftercare Cream is 100% vegan and hypoallergenic, meaning it’ll be kind to sensitive skin in the most guilt-free way possible. A cream such as this is also ideal for healing pieces on easily aggravated skin thanks to its non-greasy texture and mix of soothing botanical blends. Using this twice daily as your tattoo heals will keep your new piece hydrated and looking fresh.
